At a glance

Commercial Art exposes students to diversified career opportunities within the field of visual arts.

 

Project development from concept through completion is a major component of this program. Students are encouraged to develop technical and artistic skills, and are presented with an array of foundational skill sets in areas such as: design, drawing, painting, and illustration of three-dimensional design, fashion design, graphic design, digital arts and design, photography, layout, exhibition art and portfolio development.

Learn!

Commercial Art students will learn studio safety, digital, traditional, and booklet style portfolio presentation as well digital website portfolios.  Students will additionally cover industry expectations, drawing and sketching, current industry software, photography and marketing and advertising. Students will be taught how to develop technical and artistic skills, abilities and confidence and commitment to pursue advanced levels of training necessary for career placement or ongoing education.

Pathways!

Commercial Art students may pursue a multitude of careers including such as  package designers, fashion and accessory designers, special effects artists, digital animators, art directors, toy designers, publication illustrators, merchandisers, interior designers, product designers, educators, art therapists, or social media designers.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

 

We owe it to our fellow classmates, and to ourselves, to create a comfortable and supportive environment.  Although you will have a considerable amount of freedom to explore, make noise, and physicalize in class, there are rules we must follow to ensure that everyone benefits from the experience of creating, engaging and working with their peers as we grow and develop as artists and individuals.

Daily Requirements

Come to class on time/virtually join meets prepared with your sketchbook, notebook and shop supplies/tools everyday.

Behavioral Expectations:

R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

Respect our classroom, it will become your second home!  Respect others artwork and property.  Respect and be polite to all in class, during critiques, etc. 

  • Follow all policies/expectations presented in your Student Handbook by SCTS.

  • NO USE OF ELECTRONICS: All cell phones must be put put away when entering shop. They must remain there for the entire period unless there is a specific academic reason and permission is given. You assume responsibility for anything you bring into class. You will lose points if you have to be reminded to put away devices.

  • Do not arrive late without a pass.

  • Do not leave the classroom without permission or without signing out, this also applies to virtual students who need to leave.  Only one student may sign out at a time in class, and only one student may use the bathroom at a time.

  • Noise Level – During art projects, you may talk QUIETLY to others. During critiques and Lectures; Listen quietly and stay seated.

 

Safety

  • All backpacks, jackets, sweatshirts, etc. must be kept under the table during class.  (They may not be left there for the day)

  • Shop Safety and School Safety Guidelines apply at all times.

  •  Immediately get my attention in case of an emergency!

  • You must pass the safety test before using the X-Acto knives, sewing machines, airbrushes, hot-knives etc.

  • Fire Drills/Evacuation/Lock Down – Follow all procedures to be discussed in class. 

  • Fire Drill/Evacuation Route is hung by the classroom door. 

    • Meet me at the designated location (parking space 144) for attendance: 

    • Lock Down:Students are to meet at designated area

    • Students are to remain silent until drill is over

 

NO FOOD AND DRINKS ALLOWED IN the CLASSROOM 

Unless a medical excuse has been filed with the nurse, Bottled water ONLY [ no coffee, sugary drinks, soup, candy, etc. ]  We don’t want ants, or spills on the computer or projects!

Vandalism/Stealing: Students who purposely break/destroy/misuse art supplies will be written up and it will be followed by a phone call home.  Students who take art supplies without permission will be disciplined and will lose art privileges.  Students may sign out supplies if they need to work on an assignment or project at home, in some instances.

  • Willful destruction of another student’s project will be reported, followed by a phone call home.

VIRTUAL EXPECTATIONS:

1. Check Google Classroom Regularly

2. During virtual learning, students are expected to sign on at their assigned class time, unless otherwise told by me. If they do not they will be marked absent and disciplinary action will be taken.

3. During virtual learning students are expected to behave as they would in the classroom, no exceptions. This will be strictly enforced and students who do not follow classroom behaviors/expectations will be held to the highest accountability by myself and the Sussex Tech administration.

4. ANY and ALL material (live, recorded, etc.) presented in a virtual fashion are for the strict and sole purpose of education and CAN NOT be reused, rebroadcast or repurposed. This includes screenshots or private recordings, etc. of lessons/any material presented on google classroom.

Grading

EVERYTHING you do, create, and write will be graded!

This includes:​

  • Preparedness    

  • Projects/Assignments

  • Set-up/Clean-up        

  • Class Participation/Behavior

  • Effective use of class time       

  • Weekly sSetch         

  • Do-Now Activities      

  • Homework

  • Tests/Quizzes

  • Group Critique      

  • Final Project/Portfolio       

Due Dates:

 
  • Dates are posted in google Classroom, and updates are regularly added. You may work from home in conjunction with working in class.
  • Absences may extend due dates per day missed, however students are responsible for reaching out for information.
  • PLEASE DO NOT leave your work at home, it will be considered as unprepared and loss of your daily participation grade.  All students MUST join and use Google Classroom!

Weekly Participation/Cooperation Grade – Use class time wisely:  

  • Participate in classroom activities      

  • Perform job assigned to your best ability 

  • Be productive during  studio time!     

Homework – 

  • Sketchbook Prompts/Assignments due weekly, in conjunction with other take home assignments, study guides, etc.
